You Do Not See the Enemy
Covid19, viruses, bacteria, germs, parasites, fungi, protozoa, spores, and other forms of organisms are of great threat as hospital linens can always be a medium for hospital-acquired infection. The spread is susceptible to patients and medical practitioners in various means and the situation is very prevalent in this time and age. It is paramount that healthcare institutions accord the same respect for linen processing as they have with sterile supplies. A hygienic laundry cycle management ought to be in place to ensure that the sanitation of the linen does not compromise patients’ safety during their stay at medical facilities.
Hygienic Laundry Cycle Management
Laundry items are found throughout a hospital: uniforms, medical gowns, bed linens, catering articles, surgical dress, cleaning items (i.e. mops), patient gowns, etc. Laundry plays an essential role in patient comfort whilst protecting employees from contamination in their place of work.
Laundry is a potential carrier of hospital acquired infections. It is therefore vital to control its flow. Special measures must be taken to ensure hygiene levels are maintained. The laundry items themselves must not pose a threat to health and remain safe at every stage of their storage, cleaning, use and handling.
The key to this is to implement a strict program for all linen to be processed, whether it potentially poses a threat to health or not.
Nosocomial outbreaks related to linen and laundering have been reported for Streptococcus pyogenes, Salmonella enterica, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE), Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, mucormycosis, gastrointestinal viruses, Hepatitis A and scabies. Dirty laundry can spread germs to other areas and therefore the clean linen needs to be handled as carefully as the dirty linens. This requires an in-depth understanding of laundry flows, the correct use of fabrics suitable to the task and working practices which ensure the employees are aware of how their everyday actions can impact the laundry operation.

In the current climate whereby hospitals must be able to produce documentation to prove the quality of the processes used, the laundry flow implemented must ensure permanent control systems are in place to minimise and prevent the risk of healthcare acquired infections.
Linen hygiene is a key part of the overall quality process. The following stages can be tailored to every kind of laundry set up; carrying out an audit of the existing process, risk assessment, drawing up preventative measures, creating standard operating procedures and implementing quality assurance procedures based on protocols on RABC (Risk Analysis Bio-contamination Control) System* / EN14065 that are evaluated, monitored at various intervals and according to defined specification hygiene standards.
